WISH Wellness Centre
The new WISH Wellness Centre has been in operation since September 17, 2008. This long-awaited facility is purpose built to accomodate the needs of women survival sex workers seeking hours of respite from their lives on the street.
In November 2003, members of Vancity voted for WISH to receive their $1 million award to build a permanent facility for the WISH Wellness Centre that would eventually operate 24.7, offering vulnerable women services addressing their health, safety and well-being. There have been many set-backs in establishing this facility over the years, mostly to do with proximity to areas where other residents were not comfortable with WISH nearby. Unfortunately, the original plan to purchase and renovate a building had to be scrapped as the price of real estate increased and we were not able to find a location that suited everyone.
Happily, the City of Vancouver, in December 2006, voted to offer WISH a space in the Police Garage on Alexander Street and the process of securing permits and designing the space began in ernest. The City leased the building for $1.00 per year for 10 years, giving their commitment for the need for a place like WISH. The City also contributed to the capital cost of the Wellness Centre as did the BC Gaming and Enforcement Branch, Mr. Dave Ritchie through the BC Women's Hospital Foundation, and the Central City Foundation who committed some years ago to purchase furniture for the facility.
